A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse who has advanced education and clinical training in a health care specialty.  Most Nurse Practitioners have national certification in their area of expertise.  Nurse Practitioners serve as primary health care providers for children and adults during health and illness.

As a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner for the practice of Dr. Joycelyn M. Thread, Mrs. Helminiak’s primary duties include assessment and care for a variety of clinical situations for established patients in a busy Gastroenterology practice including determining the need for hospitalization.  She does the pre-procedure physical examinations for patients who are to have a colonoscopy or upper endoscope preformed by Dr. Theard.  She oversees and manages the Hepatitis C patient care program.

The presence of a Nurse Practitioner in Dr. Thread’s practice provides the patients with consistent and readily available health care. As a Nurse Practitioner, she orders lab tests, various radiological examinations and provides referrals to other health care specialists.  Part of her responsibility to ensure quality health care for Dr. Theard’s patients is to determine the appropriateness of medication refills and communicates this information to the patient’s pharmacy.

She triages patients to determine urgency of care and responds to patient questions regarding health issues and aspects of care.  She assists the patients in the completion of insurance and medical disability forms.

Mrs. Helminiak’s prior experience includes working as a staff nurse in the emergency departments of Northeast Baptist Hospital, Darnall Army Community Hospital, Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital and University Hospital. Her duties required rapid assessment and triage of adult and pediatric patients and for providing adult and pediatric emergency care in a busy Level I-III trauma centers.  She consistently functioned as part of the resuscitation team. She provided care to ICU patients held in ER due to hospital overflow.  She is certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).  Since 1994, she has served as a nurse and has gained experience in several specialties
